There are so many things to consider when relocating that it can begin to feel overwhelming. While there are many nuances to finding just the perfect place to live for you and your family, a few major items on the checklist can help to narrow down the search to the community that is going to be just the right fit for your lifestyle. You will want to do some background research on the areas that you are considering as well as give some thought to your own personal preferences.

Before you begin looking at homes, take some time to do your homework first:

Location. Start with the environment – where you are most comfortable? Do you prefer to be out in the country surrounded by more trees than neighbours or is living in an urban setting with shopping and dining just steps outside your door more appealing? By knowing if suburban town or city living is your style, it will help to narrow the search.

Weather. If you have been used to a year-round warm climate and are now moving to a region with colder winters, you will need to make some adjustments. You may have to budget for snow removal and heating costs and vehicles that are appropriate for the weather.

Traffic. How long of a commute are you willing to tolerate? The distance to and from your workplace and the amount of traffic should be factored into where you choose to live.

Schools. For families with children, check into the local school system to see how it has been rated and what services and educational opportunities it offers. If you are considering higher education, also research nearby colleges and universities and their degree programs.

Shopping and Dining. Look up how close the nearest amenities like pharmacies and grocery stores are to the neighbourhoods that you are interested in. Make sure that the town has the types of stores that will meet your needs.

Community Activities. What do you like to do? Are you an artist or a musician, soccer player or runner, a parent to some busy children, or all of the above? There is a community for everyone, but not everything is in one community. Look up athletic and cultural programs to make sure that you will still be able to be involved in the things that you enjoy.

Costs. There are a number of different costs to consider when deciding between locations as expenses can vary depending on the postal code. Take the time to evaluate costs for automobile insurance, homeowner’s insurance and the overall cost of living that is associated with any city or town.
